A teletypewriter is a telecommunication device used by deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired people to facilitate communication via telephone. The device is plugged into the telephone line and, if a teletypewriter is used at both ends, messages are typed between two parties. The National Relay Service facilitates conversations where a teletypewriter is only present at one end of the conversation; the operator relays the spoken content into text and reads the written text aloud.
This teletypewriter was used by Susan Shannon during her employment at Telstra. Susan was also the Telstra Ambassador to the 20th Summer Deaflympics in January 2005.
